Project Statement
The Silent Circus is my long-term photographic project documenting travelling circuses across India at a moment when they are slowly losing their place in public life.
Over the past two and a half years I have travelled to multiple cities spending time with circus communities to understand what remains when a form of live entertainment no longer draws people in the way it once did.
Fewer people come to the circus today. Children and families are increasingly absorbed by phones and social media and entertainment has moved indoors and onto screens. Inside the circus tent this shift is visible and painful.
Performers continue to present the same acts three times a day, often to very small audiences. Applause is limited and many performances unfold in near silence. Yet the work does not stop.
The lack of audience directly affects how the circus survives. With low ticket sales companies do not have the funds to build proper stages or improve lighting or create safe and welcoming spaces for families. Performances take place on makeshift infrastructure even as the acts themselves demand extreme physical effort.
Artists balance, lift, jump and suspend their bodies with minimal safety measures risking injury in order to earn a living. Watching this repetition..risk without security, labour without recognition..reveals the fragile reality of a culture sustained almost entirely by endurance.
My personal connection to this project grew from spending time within these spaces observing what happens when people continue to perform despite knowing they may not be seen. I became drawn to the moments between acts..exhaustion, waiting, quiet preparation and shared resilience.
As a photographer I have always been interested in silence, pauses and emotional undercurrents rather than spectacle. The circus brought these concerns into sharp focus.
The Silent Circus is not about saving or romanticising the circus. It is about paying attention. By spending time and building trust this project stays with a community that continues to perform with skill and risk even when few people are watching.
The photographs ask a simple question: what does it mean to keep performing when the audience is disappearing?
