Kai Johnson

Kai Johnson is a British photojournalist and documentary photographer covering political demonstrations across the UK, documenting movements from all parts of the political spectrum. His work focuses on the people at the centre of these events, using a grounded, observational approach to show how political beliefs are expressed in public spaces. Johnson’s images emphasise the context and human dynamics that shape moments of tension, solidarity, and disagreement. Alongside his political coverage, he photographs cultural events and local traditions, recording how communities gather, celebrate, and express identity. This combination of political and cultural reportage builds a broader picture of contemporary Britain as it is lived on the ground.

Project Statement

My work as a photojournalist centres on true and honest storytelling and creating a public record of events that unfold. I focus on documenting the people who gather in Britain’s streets to protest, show allegiance, or simply to be seen. I pay close attention to the individuals who stand within these crowds. What interests me is not the headline version of politics, but the human expression of it: the gestures, tensions, and quiet interactions that occur when people publicly express their opinion. The images in this project come from right-wing political demonstrations such as Unite the Kingdom rallies and Raise the Colours demonstrations. I approached these events with a grounded, observational style, working quietly and without intervention, letting scenes develop on their own terms. Photography, for me, is a way of recording how identity is performed and contested in real time. These six images are a small part of an ongoing effort to document contemporary Britain through the people who shape it at street level.
