Project Statement
Shanghai never ceases to amaze me with how active its elderly residents are. From the familiar rhythms of square dancing to vigorous morning exercises in parks and along the waterfront, there is an energy to the city that begins long before the rest of it fully wakes. It is something I quietly admire, and something I hope to carry with me as I grow older. One morning, in the soft golden light along the Bund, I came across a man dancing with a dragon. As it whooshed dramatically through the air, the dragon seemed to embrace Shanghai’s iconic skyline, almost like an ancient lifeline asserting its presence within the modern metropolis. For a fleeting moment, the glass towers and the centuries-old symbol shared the same breath, reminding me that tradition does not disappear; it simply learns new ways to move. This series captures that brief encounter with a mystical dragon, emerging in the midst of an otherwise calm and quiet morning.
