Bernard Coops

Bernard Coops is a Dutch photographer and visual artist whose autonomous practice operates at the intersection of sensory perception, the psychology of perception, and material abstraction.

The conceptual layering of his autonomous work is informed by a broad, multidisciplinary anchoring within visual media:

Academic Foundation: Coops graduated in Illustration from the CABK Art Academy (now ArtEZ University of the Arts) and subsequently completed his professional studies at the Fotoacademie.

Applied Media & Visual Direction: His expertise in visual grammar and design was extensively applied within the media industry for many years. As a designer and art director, he was responsible for the visual identity of both the Dutch public broadcasting network as well as various commercial television channels.

Knowledge Transfer: As an educator, he continuously reflects on the evolution of contemporary visual language; currently, he primarily teaches photography courses at the Dutch Academy for Image Creation (Fotovakschool).

International Projects and Institutional Recognition

Coops’ anthropological interest in the human condition and the synergy between body and mind has resulted in profound documentary work abroad. His long-term project documentating traditional Tibetan medicine (Sowa Rigpa) in India — titled ‘Bodies in Balance’ — was exhibited at the renowned Rubin Museum of Art in New York and featured in leading academic publications.

His autonomous portfolio enjoys growing international and national visibility, with exhibitions at galleries such as Laguanacazul (Buenos Aires), Casa del Arte Palma (Palma de Mallorca), and within the curated platform of the Haarlem art project LUMEN ’25.

Contemporary Positioning

Coops’ work is gaining significant momentum within the international contemporary art circuit:

BBA Prizes (Berlin): Named “Artist of the Week” for the series Traces, recognized for its poetic engagement with texture and transience.

The Hopper Prize: Selected as a “Featured Artist”, a distinction reserved for artists demonstrating exceptional commitment and a distinct voice within contemporary art practice.

My practice operates in the quiet spaces between memory and perception, exploring how the mind fragments and reconstructs sensory experiences. I am fascinated by the intangible, fleeting emotional states that leave an imprint on our consciousness but resist literal representation.

In the series Traces, I investigate this psychological archeology through abstraction, deliberate distortions, and the interplay of deep shadows and textures. Drawing from my background in film and design, I approach the photographic frame as a layered canvas where light is tactile and shadows hold the unsaid.

The resulting imagery hovers on the edge of recognition, inviting viewers to confront their own internal landscapes and projections. Ultimately, Traces is an invitation to feel the weight of the unseen and find meaning in the fragments left behind.
